KLEIN CHOCOLATE

The story of Klein Chocolate Professional Baseball Team began with two boys, Bill and Fred Klein in Penn Square Lancaster. The boys were discovered in 1894 by Milton Hershey, caramel factory owner. After selling his company and moving to Derry Township, his original homestead, he takes the advice of the boys and starts a Company baseball team. As the boys grew in experience, they branched out on their own and came to Elizabethtown. Their Company success was local but to gain regional notoriety, they had to come up with a new idea to market their Company. Hence, they relied on their baseball experience and started a professional team with a new stadium. So, in 1919 the team was formed and immediately beat every city team in the region. Newspapers gave them coverage, but this wasn’t enough. Bill wrote to the major league owners with a monetary offer to play his team and half accepted it. Klein Chocolate wins 7 games against the Major League teams including Babe Ruth in what may have been his last game as a Boston Red Sox. Then travel further into the 30’s and hear about the best of the negro league teams that played Klein’s. Lastly, was the most unusual game with the House of David. Now the Klein Chocolate tradition continues with the resurrection of the Senior Softball Team and its Sponsors.
